Computer Programming Stuff

The programming language I prefer is Smalltalk. If you're a software developer who claims to be "object oriented" and you don't know Smalltalk, you should. If you want to learn about objects and don't know Smalltalk, you should. Here's a few links to Smalltalk resources you might find helpful:

There's a Usenet newsgroup named comp.lang.smalltalk that caters to Smalltalk aficionados.

Object Arts makes a great implementation of Smalltalk for Windows called Dolphin Smalltalk. It's available in several configurations ranging in price from $59.95 to $349.95. This is the best Windows-based development tool I've ever found. There's a newsgroup named comp.lang.smalltalk.dolphin where you can get questions answered. (Please note that I'm not affiliated with Object Arts, nor do I profit in any way from the sale of their product. I'm just a satisfied customer).

Cincom puts out VisualWorks, one of the heavyweight Smalltalk implementations. Fortunately they're an enlightened company and have a version that is freely available for non-commercial purposes. Get it here. There's also a mailing list for VisualWorks Non-Commercial edition (VWNC) - to subscribe send an email with 'subscribe' in the subject line to

vwnc-request@cs.uiuc.edu

Squeak is a Smalltalk implementation produced principally by the folks who originally wrote Smalltalk. Look here to find downloads and some basic instructions on how to use Squeak. There's also a mailing list for Squeak, subscription instructions for which can be found here.

A little company called IBM also has a Smalltalk implementation. If your company won't buy anything but IBM, fear not - there's still room for Smalltalk in your future. Find some information here.
